About Us

On Sunday, April 16, 1961, a service of organization for Northminster Presbyterian Church
was conducted at St. Thomas Episcopal Church of North Syracuse with 150 persons signing as
charter members.  Sunday worship services were held in the Brown School on Buckley Road.

The new church was built in stages.  The classrooms and all purpose room were built first
and completed in 1963.  Worship was held in the all purpose room with adult and children’s
bible study meeting in various classrooms.

The first service in the new sanctuary was Christmas Eve of 1967.
The architecture of the sanctuary is taken after the “tent” meetings in biblical times.
With its high ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows there is an open, airy feeling.
The pews are arranged in a horseshoe shape around the communion table and
pulpit which puts the focus on “the Word and Sacrament.”

The Northminster Nursery School began in 1963 as an outreach to the community.
It continues under the name of the Northminster Nursery School & Early Childhood
Center and now includes a two year old program and a Universal Pre-K.

In 2002 the “Dream Team” was formed to consider the issues of accessibility,
heat loss, lack of space for meals and fellowship opportunities and more efficient
work space for staff.  A plan was developed that included programmatic enhancements
as well as facility improvements.  In 2006 a renovation of the physical space began and
a feeling of spiritual renewal ensued.

The history of Northminster Presbyterian Church continues as each day goes by.
The members and friends that make up the church hope their history
becomes a legacy of hope to the community, its neighbors and the world.
